Fleur’s journey: finding love with Snuffles

In August 2024, Fleur was one of nine rabbits rescued in Northampton. She was sneezing when she arrived at RSPCA South Bucks, and we suspected Snuffles – a chronic, contagious condition, meaning her path to a forever home would prove far from simple.

Understanding Snuffles

Snuffles, often caused by Pasteurella multocida, is a bacterial respiratory infection that can include sneezing, nasal discharge, and congestion. It can be a long-term condition requiring careful management, and without proper care, it can progress to fatal conditions. Early intervention is key.

Snuffles complicates bonding and adoption as rabbits must be housed alone or with others who share the same diagnosis.

Managing the condition

Fleur required a carefully tailored treatment plan. Initially diagnosed with an upper respiratory tract infection, she was prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to reduce inflammation and fight infection. While this brought some improvement, sneezing and nasal discharge persisted. Fleur was prescribed a mucolytic medication to relieve congestion and manage her condition. By late October, her condition stabilised enough for her to be spayed, an important milestone in readiness for rehoming.

A Sanctuary of care

Our team created a tailored environment to support Fleur’s health and wellbeing:

Strict hygiene protocols: Separate tools, bins, and clothing were used exclusively for Fleur, her litter trays were changed daily, and her living area was well ventilated to reduce irritants.

Thoughtful enrichment: Toys, apple twigs, a hay play box, and even a sundeck gave Fleur space to binky, dig, and sunbathe – keeping her active and happy.

Dietary adjustments: Her meals were carefully balanced to support digestion and reduce loose stools, focusing on hay and grass, and less greens.

Emotional connection: Volunteers spent time grooming and playing with Fleur, who loved nose rubs and cheek strokes. She was affectionate, inquisitive, and often lay beside her carers seeking comfort and companionship.

Fleur remained easy to handle and consistently affectionate throughout her recovery. Vets, and volunteers described her as a lovely rabbit.

The search for a soulmate

Having lived alone for nearly a year, Fleur needed a companion, but finding another Snuffles-positive rabbit proved difficult. Rescues within a 50-mile radius were contacted, but no match was found.

In January 2025, Fleur was listed on the RSPCA’s national website.

A potential adopter reached out in March. Their male rabbit, Albert, was a perfect match … but they were moving house. Fleur was finally adopted in August. RSPCA South Bucks helped to transport Fleur halfway to a new home in North Wales where she was able to meet her new husbun in a neutral space. Within hours, this well-travelled bunny was eating hay, using her litter tray, and settling in. Our team was thrilled.

Raising awareness

Fleur’s story is a testament to what’s possible with compassion, patience, and informed care. Rabbits with Snuffles are often overlooked, yet they can thrive with the right support.

We are grateful for the tenacity of our team of volunteers, as after a year of waiting, Fleur found her prince charming. And for every rabbit like her, there’s hope – one hop at a time.
