This is Maisie and her 3 kittens. They look lovely and healthy now, but that is not how they came in to us. Fortunately, a member of the public found them. They were in a barn and the kittens were only one week old.

Maisie had terrible diarrhoea and was very dehydrated when she was found. Because of this we rushed the family straight to the vet, and they were admitted so Maisie could go on a drip to rehydrate her. We also had a scan done which fortunately came back ok. After a few days they went to a fosterer, Maisie on antibiotics. Maisie wasn't producing enough milk for her kittens as she was so poorly, so the fosterer also gave them some special kitten formula.

Although Maisie came to us as a stray, she had clearly previously been owned as she is a very loving cat. But her owners never had her microchipped (which legally she should have been) or neutered. If the member of the public had not found them and found help, Maisie and her kittens would have died.

Please, please, please get your cats microchipped and neutered so that animal rescues are not having to constantly deal with these situations. If you get your cat microchipped and it gets lost and is taken to a vets or a rescue, they will scan the cat and contact you to arrange for it to come back. If you get your cat neutered then you will prevent unwanted kittens.

Here at RSPCA South Bucks, and at other animal rescues, we are being overwhelmed by cats and kittens at the moment. We are in the middle of a cat crisis. Please get your cat microchipped and neutered. You can find out more about microchipping at https://bit.ly/3Vysvui
